The lucrative success of mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood is leading several musicians to attempt to follow suit, with that game’s publisher Glu having signed up Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj already. Rival publisher Pocket Gems has its own music deal to sing about, with Demi Lovato. They’ve collaborated on Path to Fame, a game about players becoming stars.
Well, we say “game” – this is billed as more of an “interactive story”, with comic-book style visuals and a choose-your-own-adventure mechanic. It was developed within Pocket Gems existing app Episode, which has hundreds of other stories for people to play. Demi’s episode sees fans touring the world with her, as well as listening to her music as the soundtrack. “We believe that the best celebrity-branded mobile apps offer fans a deeper look into stars’ lives,” said Pocket Gems’ Jameel Khalfan. “Episode is the perfect medium to create these fun and authentic experiences for players.” It makes money through in-app purchases of virtual ‘passes’ and gems, although the terms of the deal with Lovato (via agency CAA) have not been disclosed.
