The world of smartphones is an increasingly mature market, and research firm IDC is predicting a slowdown in growth accordingly. It claims that global growth in smartphone shipments will slow from 27.5% in 2014 to 10.4% in 2015, and 5.1% by 2019. Its report also suggests that the status quo for smartphone platforms will continue: it thinks Android’s market share of shipments will be 81.1% this year, and exactly the same in 2019.
iOS is predicted to shrink from 15.6% of shipments in 2015 to 14.2% in 2019, although this would still be growth in the number of iPhones shipped: from 223.7m this year to 269.6m in 2019. Overall, Gartner thinks that 1.4bn smartphones will ship in 2015, rising to 1.9bn in 2019, with India emerging as an increasingly important market: “India has captured a lot of the attention that China previously received and it’s now the market with the most potential upside,” said IDC’s Ryan Reith.
