The latest music-related virtual reality (VR) project comes from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, which has developed an app for the Samsung Gear VR headset that puts classical-music fans slap-bang in the middle of its performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The live performance was filmed using 3D spherical cameras, with extra animation added to provide what VentureBeat suggests is a Disney Fantasia-like feel to the show. But only a handful of people actually own a Gear VR, so isn’t this a case of technology making the music less mainstream, not more? The LA Philharmonic is trying to solve that by packing headsets into a converted truck and taking it on the road to let people experience the app – which will also be released through Samsung and Oculus Rift’s app stores for people to download and experience at home.
