The Beatles remain the most prominent streaming holdout, but could that status be coming to an end? Tweets posted by the band’s official Twitter account on Saturday suggest something is up. They all point to the same 15-second teaser embedded on Twitter, uploaded to YouTube and posted on the band’s website: a 10-second countdown and then the artwork for compilation album ‘1’, originally released in 2000.
Beyond a hashtag – #TheBeatles1 – there is no other information about what the teaser is referring to, and when further details will emerge. ‘1’ is already available on Apple’s iTunes Store as a download, so the conclusion being drawn by many fans is a streaming release, perhaps of a remastered version. If so, the key question will be whether exclusivity remains with Apple for its Apple Music service or whether the album (and in time the entire Beatles catalogue) will also make its way onto Spotify, Google Play, Deezer and other services. Note: the official Beatles online store is “temporarily down for maintenance” so news could come as soon as today.
