If you’re a keen Snapchat user, expect to see plenty of rainbow vomit in the app today. No, your friends haven’t discovered a dangerous new variant of moonshine – it’s a new feature called “lenses” which lets people overlay animated effects on selfie videos. Including belching rainbows.

More interesting is Snapchat’s first addition of in-app purchases to its app with a feature called “replays”. This already exists for free: people can ‘replay’ one snap from a friend every day once it’s disappeared. Now they can buy three more replays for $0.99. “They’re a little pricey — but time is money!” chirped the company in its blog post. For now, the replays can only be bought in the US. It’s Snapchat’s first move beyond advertising in its business model, although CEO Evan Spiegel has publicly mused in the past about the potential for in-app purchases.
