Scottish band Model Aeroplanes have been signed by Island Records in the UK, after uploading their music to Spinnup, the unsigned-bands site owned by Island’s parent company Universal Music. It’s the first such signing in the UK, where Spinnup launched in July 2014 – although nine artists have bagged deals in Sweden, where the platform launched in 2013 as a partnership between Universal and X5 Music Group.

That said, Model Aeroplanes’ signing owes quite a bit to traditional A&R techniques rather than just an internet service: Spinnup scout Yvonne McLellan said she’d seen the band several times over the course of their young career before deciding they were ready to go further. “When discussing the way forward I suggested that for their next single they should think about Spinnup. They got on board and I scouted them,” she said.
