The UK’s Official Charts Company has announced a new addition to its albums chart. No, not YouTube streams (yet) – it will now count albums sold at gigs across the UK, via a new system called Lightning Live. The Guardian reported that the OCC has been testing the scheme for six months to ensure it reports accurate sales of albums sold at merch stalls during concerts. “The launch of Lightning Live follows approaches from both independent and major labels, who are increasingly using live events as a route to get their products to fans and new audiences,” said COO Omar Maskatiya. This follows the addition of streaming data to the albums chart earlier this year.
