Instagram turned five this week, and celebrated by releasing some stats on its community of 400m active users.
They included the interesting fact that four of the top five Instagram accounts belong to musicians.
Taylor Swift’s 49.6m followers makes her the most popular Instagram account, with Beyoncé third on 47.2m followers, Selena Gomez fourth with 45.9m and Ariana Grande fifth with 44.6m.
The only non-musician in the top five – and you will surely have seen this coming – is second-placed Kim Kardashian with 48.1m followers.
t’s interesting to compare these audiences with other platforms. Swift, for example, has 49.6m followers on Instagram, but 64.4m on Twitter; 72.8m on Facebook; 16.4m subscribers to her Vevo channel… and 1.6m monthly listeners on Spotify (admittedly, she only has a handful of non-album tracks available there).
Also interesting: a quote from Instagram boss Kevin Systrom this week: “It’s just a matter of time before music becomes even more dominant on Instagram,” he told the BBC.
