Twitter, Facebook and even Spotify have their own verified schemes for stars and public figures, and now Snapchat is following suit with something called “official stories”.

The company explains it thus: “If a Snapchatter has an Official Story, their name will appear under an Official Stories header when you search for them. Also, an emoji will appear next to their name so you know they’re the real deal. At this time, Official Stories are being rolled out to a small group of Snapchatters.”

Justin Bieber and Tiesto are among that small group, and with a number of musicians now using Snapchat, we expect more to join them in the coming weeks.

The launch came as Snapchat also introduced a store to sell its “lens” effects – rainbow vomiting and the like – for $0.99 each.

Once bought, they’ll be permanently available for a user to adorn their snaps. Snapchat recently launched its first sponsored (free) lens for the new Peanuts movie, so the lenses are key to its efforts to start making money from its 100m+ daily users.
