Pianist Lang Lang has been app-savvy for some time now: for a while he made a splash at his concerts by encoring with Smule’s Magic Piano app running on an iPad.

Now he’s launching his own app in partnership with startup Tido and Faber Music. It’s called Mastering the Piano with Lang Lang and is available for iPad, just in time for the launch of Apple’s larger iPad Pro tablet.

The app will teach users a range of piano pieces of increasing difficulty, with Lang Lang popping up in coaching videos to help improve their skills.

It will serve up sheet music that can be played, sped up and slowed down, with additional features including a metronome, annotations and composer biographies.

The app itself is free, with some lessons available for free and others sold as in-app purchases – individual units cost £2.99 while entire levels (of eight units) cost £11.99.
