Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine is digging himself out of a hole this morning, after his comments he made on CBS’ This Morning show about women and music discovery.
“I always knew that women find it very difficult at times – some women – to find music. And this helps make it easier… Girls are sitting around, talking about boys, right? Or complaining about boys, when they have their heart broken or whatever, and they need music for that, right?”
The response online was rapid, especially on Twitter, with a mixture of anger, exasperation and quickfire wit from people pointing out Iovine’s sexism – as well as some people defending him.
Within hours, he issued an apology. “We created Apple Music to make finding the right music easier for everyone – men and women, young and old,” said Iovine. “Our new ad focuses on women, which is why I answered the way I did, but of course the same applies equally for men. I could have chosen my words better, and I apologise.”
We’ve collected some of the notable tweets in a Storify, which you can find below. Let us know what you think of Iovine’s views and subsequent apology by posting a comment.
