Deezer secured one of the more leftfield digital exclusives of recent times on Friday, bagging the rights to stream The Pope’s new release.

‘Pope Francis: Wake Up!’ sadly ISN’T a cover of the chirpy Boo Radleys Britpop tune, but is rather an 11-song collection of “antiphons and sacred hymns, reimagined by contemporary composers and musicians with Pope Francis’ voice, while he recites in four different languages excerpts of the most significant speeches he has made”.

We don’t think there are many donks on it. Deezer had the album on Friday (20 November) a week ahead of its general release, and all joking aside, the service’s global footprint – particularly in continents like Latin America – made it a decent exclusive to get.

Deezer also told Music Ally that the Pope now also has a lifetime subscription to the service’s Premium+ tier. Which at least means the Vatican can swell Deezer’s famously-long list of countries where it has listeners…
