Apple Music reportedly has 300k subscribers in Russia

It emerged earlier this month that Apple Music now has more than 10 million subscribers, but breaking down where those people are is the next task for the industry.

Russian business newspaper Vedomosti has provided one piece in the puzzle, claiming that there are already 300,000 Apple Music subscribers in Russia – a figure backed up by Billboard’s industry sources there.

In fact, they say that “Russia is quite likely to be on the top five of Apple Music biggest markets in the number of subscribers” – big news for a country whose legal music market has historically struggled against piracy.

Vedomosti also claims that iTunes download sales have fallen by about a quarter in the six months since Apple Music launched in Russia.

All eyes will be on the IFPI’s figures for the Russian industry in 2015, when they are released later this year: in 2014, streaming revenues there were just under $6m.
