TechCrunch is very impressed with OurMix, a new app for iOS and Android that helps people discover new songs from their friends, via Spotify.

“OurMix is social music discovery done right,” claims its headline, hailing the fact that the app identifies friends who share your music tastes before recommending tracks from their libraries that you may like.

The app also has its own “curators” in various music genres, who can be followed for more suggestions. And it creates a daily mix of tracks based on all this.

“Spotify’s native social features feel like an afterthought. Everything else requires that you manually share,” claims CEO Kishore Doddi.

It looks like a neatly-designed app swerving the historic pitfall of social music recommendations – the assumption that your Facebook friends share your music tastes.

However, there’s something else most social music discovery apps have failed to do right: find a business model that sustains them to even a second round of funding, let alone the long term.

At this stage, it’s unclear how OurMix will solve that problem better than the many failed attempts littering recent history. But we’re optimists: let’s see what the startup comes up with.
