Is Rihanna’s new album ‘ANTI’ giving Tidal a promotional boost? Only a brief one, on iOS at least.

Engadget reported on Friday that Tidal’s app had zoomed from number 147 in Apple’s US App Store free-apps chart to number 13: “Not far behind Pandora and Spotify”.

The story admitted that this would likely be a “temporary blip”, and so it was: one weekend later, and Tidal isn’t even inside the top 200 free apps in the US store.

One reason for the short-lived jump may have been the fact that the big news around ‘ANTI’ on Tidal was its availability as a free download for fans – but from Tidal’s website rather than its iOS app.

Also, the real test of The Rihanna Effect will be what it does to Tidal’s subscription numbers, and we’ll have to wait a couple of months to see that in full.

For now, Tidal is the 116th top-grossing iPhone app in the US, 18 places above Rhapsody, but far behind Pandora and Spotify.
