One of the most popular torrent clients, uTorrent, is introducing a new way for people to pay for its service.
“For our latest development, we’re happy to introduce Ad-Free μTorrent for $4.95 annual subscription,” explained the company in a blog post.
“This gives users the option of avoiding any and all ads in the client. It’s exciting to us because it gives users the ability to avoid advertising at 25% of the cost that it used to be – about 5 dollars a year instead of 20 dollars.”
The latter referring to the existing uTorrent Pro subscription. The irony of people being willing to pay $5 a year for software that enables them to not pay for other kinds of content isn’t lost on us.
But with the creative industries increasingly focused on squeezing the flow of advertising revenue to torrent sites and clients, testing a way to pay to remove ads may be a logical step for uTorrent.
