For anyone thinking about how music recommendations and discovery are evolving, a blog post by Netflix’s developer team is worth a long read.

It explains the latest tweaks to the online video service’s recommendation algorithms, including the challenges of making them effective globally.

“We expect that Bollywood movies would have a different popularity in India than in Argentina. However, should two members get similar recommendations, if they have similar profiles but if one member lives in India and the other in Argentina?” is one of the questions it poses.

“Perhaps if they are both watching a lot of Sci-Fi, their recommendations should be similar. Meanwhile, overall we would expect Argentine members should be recommended more Argentine Cinema and Indian members more Bollywood… This leads to the question: is local taste or personal taste more dominant? Based on the data we’ve seen so far, both aspects are important, but it is clear that taste patterns do travel globally.”

The idea of “worldwide communities of interest” is just as interesting to music, although hardly unknown.
