Music-streaming services are trying all manner of inventive marketing tactics to attract new audiences.

Spotify appears to be the first to have hit on ‘appearing in a movie about emoji’ as a route to new listeners, though.

The company has reportedly struck a deal with Sony Pictures to appear in its upcoming film about emoji – yes, this is a real thing that will be in real cinemas, not a late April Fool – as one of a number of smartphone apps that will feature.

The Wrap paraphrased Sony Pictures president Kristine Belson’s explanation of the integration as “the filmmakers will rely on real-world apps to tell its story, like having characters navigate boats on an actual stream to represent music streaming”.

We look forward to Tinder also featuring with some kind of aubergine deluge.
