The streaming and radio sectors are often described in opposition to one another, but there is plenty of crossover too.
Particularly for the BBC, which maintains playlists on the big streaming services, and is linking with them through its BBC Music app too.
Now the Beeb’s 6Music station has booked Spotify’s Discover Weekly product manager Matt Ogle in for a one-hour show to be aired this Sunday in the UK.
Called The Algorithm Method (!) it’s a mixture of music and discussion about the world of streaming recommendations.
“Featuring a playlist curated by an algorithm which was based on 150 songs played on the network by our 6 Music Recommends presenters Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs and Tom Ravenscroft, Matt and Matthew also discuss where algorithm meets human curation, where streaming is heading and how the rise of music technology is affecting artists and audiences alike,” explains 6Music’s programme listing.
If Jimmy Iovine hears this, he’ll blow a gasket. Although on a more serious note, we do suspect that some of Spotify’s rivals may criticise the BBC if they weren’t invited to take part too. (Caveat: the show hasn’t aired yet so we can’t say for sure whether they are included / were invited).
The show should make for interesting listening though: Ogle, as you may or may not know, already publishes his own ‘Really You’ radio show on Mixcloud regularly.
