We already know that Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have become
important news sources for a generation of smartphone users. A new report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism puts
some figures to that.

More than half of all online news consumers are turning to those three services and other social networking sites for their news, ahead of traditional news publishers. In Facebook’s case, 44% of the study’s respondents said they use it to read, watch and share news every week.

In the Financial Times’ writeup of the report, New York Times CEO Mark Thompson gives a suitably doomy (and pop-culture referencing) quote. “Winter really is coming for many of the world’s news publishers,” said Thompson. “Publishers enjoy far less pricing power, and even the largest of us are dwarfed by those who dominate the field, players like Facebook and Google whose immense scale allows them to undercut everybody else.”
