Remember the days – 2009, specifically – when Ashton Kutcher, CNN and Britney Spears were racing to become the first Twitter account to reach 1m followers? Seven years on, and the milestones have increased considerably.

Late last week, Katy Perry became the first Twitter account to reach 90m followers, with musicians taking a clean sweep of the top three places on the social network. Justin Bieber is the second biggest account with 83.8m followers, while Taylor Swift is third with 79m. “Dang this is tight,” tweeted Perry in response to Twitter’s announcement of her 90m milestone – a tweet that received just over 6k retweets and 16k likes. Alas, Perry didn’t spend the weekend partying to celebrate the achievement. “Every1 else havin a lit Fridaynight & I’m here examining the nose pore cleaner strip I just peeled off & I must say, nothing can top this,” she tweeted on Saturday night. #engagement.
