“This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” said Katy Perry, about her surprise new single ‘Rise’.

Which would be a more convincing sentiment if the song wasn’t exclusive to one company’s digital music services.

For now, the only way fans can get Katy Perry’s ‘Rise’ is on Apple Music or iTunes, with no announcement about when, for example, her 10.7 million monthly Spotify listeners will have access to it.

Still, the deal is another coup for Apple, which has been attracting a steady stream of artists for such exclusives – and reaping the rewards of climbing subscriber numbers to boot.
