We say “probably” because there are still no official figures for how much money the Pokémon Go mobile game has made.
Analytics firm Sensor Tower has been seizing its chance to get press coverage by providing its own estimates though, and it now claims Pokémon Go has passed $200m of revenue since its release a month ago. That’s nearly double the first-month total of Clash Royale, previously the most lucrative mobile game release of 2016. Pokémon Go revenues appear to have accelerated since the game’s launch in Japan earlier this month – unsurprising, given the popularity of the Nintendo franchise there. With China and India yet to get the game, analyst predictions of $1bn in revenues for Pokémon Go’s first year may now seem cautious. The figures are also a reminder that the music industry may find it tough to board the mobile gaming bandwagon: as we reported last week, Britney Spears’ official mobile game made just $1.1m in its first month-and-a-half on the app stores in Q2 this year.
