In an interview with Music Ally earlier this year, Spotify’s Matt Ogle alluded to plans for more personalised playlists in the wake of Discover Weekly.
On Friday, one of them made its debut on Spotify: Release Radar. It’s a weekly one or two-hour playlist of tracks released in the last few weeks, personalised for each listener according to their habits and followed artists. “We wanted to create the simplest way for you to find all the newly released music that matters the most to you, in one playlist,” is how Ogle described it on Friday. Also note what Spotify told artists about the new playlist on its Spotify Artists blog: “As an artist, this means it’s even more essential to get your fans to follow you on Spotify,” it explained. “Your new releases are automatically added to every follower’s Release Radar — so the more followers you have, the more fans that’ll never miss out on new tunes.” We’ll be interested to see if this sparks a wave of artist exhortations on social media for fans to follow their Spotify profiles.
