Tough times for big torrent sites? KickassTorrents was shut down recently and its alleged founder arrested, but now meta-search engine Torrentz has shut down too.

Its demise is more mysterious however: at the time of writing there is no indication of a police operation behind the scenes. Instead, there is simply a message on the site describing it in the past tense – “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines” – and a message for registered users promising that “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.” Torrentz was a hugely-popular way to search for torrents on other sites, so its shutdown leaves a big gap for the filesharing community – but a reason for celebration for rightsholders, even if they weren’t involved in its demise.
