Yes, that headline sounds like a contradiction, but what’s happening with streaming TV service Hulu does make sense.

The company is shutting down its own ad-supported free tier in order to focus on its subscription service: the equivalent in music would be Spotify shutting down its free tier. However, Hulu is expanding its partnership with Yahoo to provide shows to the latter’s new Yahoo View ad-supported TV site. “For the past couple years, we’ve been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalised content experience possible to our viewers,” said Hulu SVP Ben Smith. “As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy.” It’s an interesting contrast with Spotify, which has also been working hard on personalisation features – but across both its free and premium tiers.
