Mexican artist Juan Gabriel died aged 66 last month, and the flood of fans playing his music on YouTube since then has now been quantified.

Gabriel is currently top of the YouTube Music Global Top 100 chart by some distance, with his view count rocketing to 316m in the week of 26 August – 1 September, a rise of just under 600%.

Note, the second-placed Chainsmokers had 123m views that week.

It is no surprise that deaths of prominent musicians send their YouTube counts soaring: not least because YouTube videos are usually embedded in news stories about them.

In other YouTube milestone news, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s ‘See You Again’ has become the second YouTube video to pass 2bn views, joining Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’.
