Justin Bieber first came to prominence on YouTube. Shawn Mendes first broke through on Vine. Now a 13 year-old Canadian called Johnny Orlando could be following in their footsteps by building a music career from early fame on social apps. Tubefilter reports that Orlando has been signed by ‘digital talent network’ Collab, which is planning to produce music videos and develop original shows for the teenager, among other opportunities. Note the platform where Orlando is most popular, according to the report: “Orlando today counts 3.8 million followers on musical.ly, 2.2 million Instagram followers, and 1.2 million YouTube subscribers.” It’s possible that Orlando could become the first star from Musical.ly to build a recording career for himself, if all goes well. Given that service’s current growth, he is unlikely to be the last.
