The French authorities are on a run of success shutting down piracy websites. Earlier this month, What.cd went offline after a raid by French police, and now one of the country’s largest pirate site Zone-Telechargement. The official Gendarmerie Nationale Twitter account confirmed the news, claiming that it had cost music, film/TV and games rightsholders €75m in lost revenues. TorrentFreak reports that before its closure, the site was the 11th most popular website in France and 438th in the world, with its traffic accelerating since July according to stats on web-traffic firm Alexa. Zone-Telechargement wasn’t the only French site of its type to be shut down yesterday: another direct-download site, DL-Protect, was also booted offline. Local reports are suggesting that the two sites may have been run by the same group of people, with seven arrests made as part of the investigation.
