Last week, Spotify said that The Weeknd had broken its record for the most daily streams by a single artist – without saying how many streams that was. Over the weekend, the streaming service released an update, including the all-important number: more than 40m daily streams. Meanwhile, the Canadian star’s new album ‘Starboy’ has also broken Spotify’s record for the most first-week streams, with more than 223m, while he ended the week as Spotify’s most popular artist with 37.8 million monthly listeners. Even though Spotify’s userbase will have grown since it reached 100 million earlier this year, at least a third of them have listened to The Weeknd in the last month. As we explained last week, this isn’t just a simple tale of one star’s popularity in 2016: Spotify has thrown its full weight behind ‘Starboy’ including prominent playlist placements and even pop-up prompts for people to listen.
