You could be excused for blinking at Nielsen’s claim that Apple Music averaged more than 68 million monthly users in the US alone last year.

However, the company is referring to Apple’s ‘Music’ app – the one preloaded on every iOS device and used to access people’s digital collections – rather than the ‘Apple Music’ streaming service.

Still, ‘Music’ was the ninth most popular smartphone app of 2016 in the US according to the research firm – and given that those rankings are based on Android and iOS, the iOS-only Music app’s performance is impressive. Top of the list was Facebook, which Nielsen estimates averaged just over 146 million monthly users in the US last year. Facebook Messenger (129.7m) was second, and YouTube (113.7m) third.
