Spotify’s general counsel Horacio Gutierrez gave an interview to the Harvard Law School’s Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law in December. His comments addressed Spotify’s sustainability in the future.

“We have opportunities to continue to grow geographically, in terms of further penetration of the markets in which we already operate in, in terms of our ability to convert free users to our premium service, and in our ability to monetise other aspects of our service, including our free tier,” said Gutierrez.

But he delivered a warning of sorts too: “In order to do that, we must have a profitable business. And therefore, while everyone should benefit, we also need to be able to fund the investments we are making on innovation from a technology perspective, and to fund our infrastructure and expansion into new markets.”
