Google had a milestone to celebrate yesterday: the fifth birthday of its Google Play store, which opened its doors on 6 March 2012 as a rebrand of the company’s existing Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore offerings.
“In five years, we’ve grown to more than 1 billion active users in 190 countries. And with millions of apps, 40 million songs, 5 million books, and more movies than ever, there’s so much to explore,” explained a blog post yesterday.
As part of the celebration, Google also published some lists – including its top five installed apps ever in the US (a chart that doesn’t include its own apps that are pre-installed on Android smartphones).
Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Snapchat take the first, second, fourth and fifth places, but nestled in the middle is Pandora Radio.
No figures are included with the blog post, although on Google Play the music-streaming app is listed as having between 100m and 500m installs.
