Social app Musical.ly has a new way for its users to collaborate on videos: Duet. It’s a way to create split-screen videos featuring two people singing and dancing, who don’t have to be in the same location.
There are shades of Smule’s duets in the Sing! Karaoke app here, particularly in the way Musical.ly has launched the new feature with a celebrity contest.
“Bruno Mars wants to see your sweet dance so he’s invited you to do a duet with him on musical.ly,” explained the company in a blog post.
“Head to #dancewithbruno and create a duet video to Bruno’s ‘That’s What I Like’ music video. Then nominate and tag 3 friends to create the duet video with Bruno.”
People are then encouraged to use the hashtag on their various social media accounts, with Mars enlisted to share on the best examples.
It’s part of an upswing in the app’s partnerships with artists: Katy Perry, Maroon 5, the Backstreet Boys and Meghan Trainor have all recently worked with the company.
