We, like many labels, have often pondered the question of why a music fan would download and use a standalone app – even from their favourite artist.
Until today, the answer ‘to get an engineering job at Jaguar Land Rover’ had never occurred to us. More fool us, because that’s exactly what’s happening with Gorillaz’ recently-launched AR app.
The app is getting a new ‘Jaguar Land Rover recruitment area’ where fans can try to assemble an electric sports-car, before trying to crack a bunch of code-breaking puzzles in an AR game.
The twist: fans that succeed get a fast-track through to interview for engineering positions at the automotive firm, which is on a drive to hire more than 1,000 new electronic and software engineers.
It’s part of a wider partnership between Gorillaz and Jaguar Land Rover, which has seen the band’s Noodle character appointed as the carmaker’s ‘Formula E race team and STEM ambassador’.
“Here we’ve found an engaging way to recruit a diverse talent pool in software systems, cyber systems, app development and graphics performance,” said Jaguar’s head of electrical engineering Alex Heslop.
