YouTube has revealed more details about its upcoming Step Up: High Water drama series, which will be released as part of its YouTube Red subscription service this Autumn.
Based on the Step Up dance movies, the 10-episode series will star musician Ne-Yo, with original music written by Jason Boyd and Jared Gutstadt – the latter is also president and chief creative officer of creative music agency Jingle Punks.
Step Up: High Water will be YouTube Red’s first scripted drama, as it edges into the territory currently dominated by Netflix, Amazon and Hulu in the US.
While YouTube hasn’t ever given subscriber figures for YouTube Red, it did say last week that the original shows on the service have generated nearly 250m views so far.
However, YouTube has a two-track strategy for original TV shows now: it is also commissioning exclusive shows for its free, ad-supported service – including several starring musicians.
