Rumours about an imminent acquisition of streaming service SoundCloud had died down, but the gossip-drums are beating once more.
The New York Post – still the publication of choice for strategic music-industry leaks – reports that SoundCloud is once again “being eyed by a host of players”.
Deezer is mentioned as one of them, for the first time, while Apple “is again said to be in the mix as it eyes a free ad-supported bolt-on” for Apple Music. Although we smiled at the reference to some Apple insiders calling the claim “fake news” – given Jimmy Iovine’s prominent use of that term in a separate interview this week.
Investment company KKR, which was about to take a stake in Pandora before the latter opted for Sirius XM instead, is also thought to be in the frame, but the Post suggested that Deezer is in pole position.
“Deezer is making a serious run,” said its source, with the article portraying SoundCloud as “a key chess piece in the game to build a rival to the Big Four: Spotify, Apple, Amazon and YouTube”.
