Radiohead’s latest secret treat for fans is a ZX Spectrum computer program that forms part of the $130 Boxed Edition of their OK Computer re-release.
Fans buying that already knew that they’d get “a C90 cassette mix tape compiled by us, taken from OK Computer session archives and demo tapes” as well as download versions of those tracks.
But Ars Technica reports on how fans have discovered a bonus extra: two minutes of computer tones that reminded people (of a certain age) of the days of 8-bit computers like the ZX Spectrum.
Naturally, someone tried playing the tones through a Spectrum emulator, and discovered a 30-line computer program with a message from the band. And a further hidden message that reads “congratulations….you’ve found the secret message syd lives hmmmm. We should get out more”.
Maybe, and it’s a tiny part of the campaign, but a touch that fans will love. Even if someone needs to explain to the younger elements of Radiohead’s fanbase what a ZX Spectrum was in the first place…
