Amazon and Google have their own smart speakers with Apple’s HomePod set to join them by the end of 2017, as well as devices for China from the various tech giants there.
It was only a matter of time before rumours about Facebook joining the voice-activated party started buzzing. Taiwanese news site DigiTimes claims that the social network is working on its own Echo.
“Instead of voice recognition functionality, the company will focus more on image display and will adopt a 15-inch touch panel for the device,” claimed its report, based on sources within the manufacturing supply chain.
“The product will be manufactured by Pegatron Technology for release in the first quarter of 2018… The device has already begun small volume of pilot production at Pegatron’s plants in China.”
DigiTimes has a mixed record of predicting new gadgets, but Facebook’s interest in this category would not be a surprise. One question concerns its current lack of an Alexa / Siri-style smart assistant, although it would be unsurprising if this, too, was on Facebook’s roadmap.
