Coldplay

The latest marketing partnership around virtual reality focuses on Coldplay, whose 17 August gig in Chicago will be streamed live to headsets. Specifically, to Samsung Gear VR headsets, through a partnership between the manufacturer and Live Nation.

The concert will be streamed for free in more than 50 countries via the Samsung VR service, with a replay available “for a limited time” afterwards. The event is part of the partnership between Samsung and Live Nation that was announced in May.

A year before that, the live-music giant announced a separate partnership with VR firm NextVR, promising to stream “hundreds” of gigs live to headsets. That September, the pair enlisted bank Citi as a commercial partner, although it does not appear to be involved in the Coldplay gig now.

The band, too, have form when it comes to virtual reality: in December 2014, NextVR filmed one of their concerts and made clips available for the Gear VR.
