The National

The latest band testing the virtual-reality waters is The National, with a VR documentary filmed and distributed by the New York Times.

’The National: Something Out of Nothing’ was released on Friday to tie in with the band’s latest album ‘Sleep Well Beast’, with the film focusing on The National at work in their Hudson Valley studio, as well as a live concert in Copenhagen.

It can be watched online via the New York Times website, or within its NYT VR app for iOS, Android and Gear VR. The app has so far been downloaded more than 1.2m times since its debut in November 2015, although there are no stats for active users to gauge the likely audience for The National’s film.

For the band, the 12-minute documentary is a nice piece of extra marketing, even if it doesn’t pull up many trees in terms of viewership. The YouTube version of the film currently has 769 views…
