We’ve been writing about Spotify’s addition of video to playlists like RapCaviar in the US. Now the streaming service is expanding the feature globally, with Sam Smith acting as the guinea pig.

Smith made his comeback on Friday with a new track called ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’, shooting an exclusive vertical-video for Spotify as part of the return.

The video was featured in some of Spotify’s high-profile playlists including Today’s Top Hits and This Is: Sam Smith. The key point is that this goes beyond the US.

“It will be a global premiere and live in approximately 40 playlists,” a spokesperson told Music Ally, while adding that the video will NOT be live in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan.

With Spotify’s video strategy thought to be shifting a bit more towards playlists rather than original shows, the global expansion of this feature is notable for the company.

For now, Spotify is the only digital service to have a video for Smith’s new song, although an official-audio version released on YouTube on Friday already has 8.6m views on that platform.
