As a free radio-style streaming service, Pandora has always been focused on ‘stations’ rather than playlists. But now with its premium tiers, the company is starting to follow its rivals in that space by curating playlists too.
“Today we launched Featured Playlists to help you find the perfect jam to set the mood for any moment, keep up with trending artists, and discover new music with over 250 playlists that are hand-picked and re-freshed… by our wickedly expert curators,” explained Pandora in a blog post.
A number of the playlists will also have a “twinning” radio station on Pandora, making the picks accessible to free listeners as well as premium subscribers.
Pandora emphasised the quirky nature of some of the playlists: Hipster Brunch, Country Drinkin’ Songs, I Hate My Boss, Somebody Done Me Wrong Songs and Tight Pants Dance Party are among the playlists being touted.
For now this is all about human curation not Discover Weekly-style algorithmically-personalised playlists, although Pandora does already have a ‘Thumbprint Radio’ station along those lines.
