Every music-streaming service has their initiative to highlight emerging artists, and now Shazam wants in on the talent-spotting fun.
It’s launching a programme called ‘Next to Know’ which will choose four artists a month – based on its tagging data – who are breaking through.
“In previous years, our data has helped highlight household names way ahead of them breaking into the mainstream. However, we’ve seen a change in how quickly an artist can break and we want to reflect that, too,” said its global head of content Julian Marshall.
Shazam has also picked 10 tips for 2018 to get it started: Sofi Tukker; Jessie Reyez; Blackbear; Sigrid; BTS; Billie Eilish; Tom Walker, Lil Pump; NF; and Devin Dawson. Some of those predictions aren’t exactly pushing the risk-boat out – Sigrid, BTS and Lil Pump for example – but that’s true of most initiatives of this type.
More interesting will be how ‘Next To Know’ links in with Apple Music once Shazam is acquired by Apple – whose streaming service has its own ‘Up Next’ programme to promote emerging talent.
