To the list of ‘surprising things we’ve seen on Facebook in 2018’ we can now add ‘Nightmares on Wax talking about the early days of Warp Records’.
Not that this is surprising in itself, but the source of the video is interesting: Spotify. The streaming service has created the minute-long promo featuring musician George Evelyn explaining his initial meeting with the founders of Sheffield label Warp in 1989.
“Time for a Warp Records history lesson from Nightmares On Wax,” ran the comment alongside it, with a link to the label’s own Warp Selections – A Weekly Mixtape playlist on Spotify.
“Lots more label stories to come,” wrote recently-appointed artist and label services exec Lucy Blair as she shared the post on Facebook.
With labels having complained in the past that their playlists get crowded out on Spotify by its in-house brands, it’s interesting to see these kinds of social stories being used to send listeners towards the label-owned playlists.
