A pair of interesting articles on blogging platform Medium may provide some industry inspiration today. First, there’s Idagio product director Bas Grasmayer’s piece asking “what people in music tech would tell their 18 year-old selves”.
From former Geffen CTO Jim Griffin (“Get 8+ hours of regular sleep a night. Doing it right is like the most powerful drug in the world”) to Outdustry’s Ed Peto (“Surround yourself with smart people — continuously challenge yourself by being out of your depth, slightly in awe of those around you”) there are some good nuggets of advice.
Second, Pandora’s Glenn Peoples has been asking music-biz people what books they’ve been reading and would recommend to their peers.
They range from music-focused books (Streaming, Sharing, Stealing. Big Data & the Future of Entertainment; How Music Got Free) to wider tech and media tomes (The Attention Merchants: The Epic Scramble To Get Inside Our Heads; What To Do When Machines Do Everything; Move Fast Break Things: How Facebook, Google and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermine Democracy).
There’s an excellent reading list in it. Bonus content: Music Ally’s Stuart Dredge recommending his favourite sci-fi novel featuring super-smart planet-terraforming space spiders.
