For all its troubles in the last year, SoundCloud still elicits affection from a lot of artists who made their first moves on the platform – including some who’ve since become global stars.
Now the streaming service is flagging that up much more prominently with a new initiative called ‘First on SoundCloud’.
It’s partly about telling the origin stories of artists who found their first audiences on SoundCloud, starting off with 10: Kehlani, Galimatias, Taylor Bennett, Lorine Chia, Melo Makes Music, Party Pupils, Jay Prince, Cathedrals, starRo, and Witt Lowry.
(We’re guessing that Chance the Rapper’s story is possibly a little well-known by now, as important as SoundCloud was in his rise.)
SoundCloud will be telling these stories on its site, apps, social feeds, newsletters and through advertising. The other element to ‘First on SoundCloud’ is a push for artists uploading music to the platform to tag it as #SCFIRST.
They’ll then be considered for inclusion in a dedicated playlist; for social promotion; and for “fast track consideration for monetisation in SoundCloud Premier” – the service’s revenue-sharing program, which is expanding this year.
