Universal Music subsidiary Capitol Music Group is deepening its partnership with startups and the tech industry, by launching its own Capitol Innovation Center (CIC) based at its famous headquarters in Los Angeles.

It launches on 15 April with what’s being described as “a collaborative workspace and songwriting studio” designed to house musicians, technologists and students working together on creative projects.

The CIC will also host events and hackathons, kicking off with a session on inclusion and change called ‘The Future She Built’ on 18 April.

There will also be a CIC-branded hackathon on 2-3 June, which will give participants a sandbox of Universal Music audio-streaming tracks, working with 7digital and cloud-tech firm Cloudinary.

It’s a development of past involvement with startups from UMG, since the winning teams in the hackathon will be eligible for eight-month ‘innovation licences’ to use the catalogue.
