Despite grumbles – including ours, yesterday – about the nature of its promotion on Spotify, Drake’s new album ‘Scorpion’ is already a multiple record-breaker.

Billboard reports that the album has “already smashed the US one-week streaming record for an album – in just three days”. That means more than 435m on-demand audio streams in the US, to beat the 431.3m streams for Post Malone’s ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys’ in that album’s first week earlier this year. Billboard reckons Drake could be on course for more than 700m streams by the end of its first full week in the US.

Debate about Spotify’s service-wide promotion of ‘Scorpion’ continues though: a separate report suggests that some Spotify Premium users are claiming to have received a refund on this month’s subscription after complaining about being subjected to what they see as ‘advertising’ – although some other users appear to have been refused such a refund.
