The video for Maroon 5’s single ‘Sugar’ has been popular on YouTube, with nearly 2.7bn views so far for the band’s exploits crashing wedding receptions. YouTube liked it so much, it’s now commissioned an entire series based on the video’s concept.
w‘Sugar’ will be an eight-episode show behind the YouTube Premium paywall, executive-produced by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. It’ll choose deserving people to get special ‘pop-up’ performances from their favourite stars, with Snoop Dogg, Blake Shelton, Fifth Harmony, Bad Bunny, Kelly Clarkson and Charlie Puth among the artists taking part.
“Not only is Adam Levine an incredible artist, but he uses his voice to inspire others all around the world — which so beautifully aligns with what YouTube stands for,” said YouTube’s global head of original content Susanne Daniels.
Sugar will join other music-focused shows and one-offs on YouTube Premium, including K-Pop documentary BTS: Burn the Stage; travel show F2 Finding Football (which also uses musicians as its guest stars); Lindsey Stirling: Brave Enough; Katy Perry: Will You Be My Witness; and the director’s cut of Demi Lovato’s Simply Complicated.
